The Belt

When the Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Ephesians, he had been closely guarded by Roman soldier for several months. He must have had a good opportunity to observe pieces of the soldier’s armour at close range. “Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth….Eph 6:14. The Roman army had the finest armour of the ancient world and Paul used it as an illustration of the armour of God has for the Christians to use against Satan. In the Roman’s armour the girdle was the belt, six to eight inches wide, which went around his waist. It was one of his most important pieces of equipment because everything else was fastened to his belt. If the belt wasn’t in place, then the armour wouldn’t be secure.

Paul says that the Christian’s foundation piece of armour is the truth : growing knowledge and understanding of the Scripture and how they are applied to life. God wants us to have defensive armour against the wiles of Satan. A soldier does not put on his armour after going into battle but in preparation for battle. The belt of truth must be secure or everything else will fall off!

Satan’s strategy has always been to blind men’s minds to the truth of God’s forgiveness in Christ. When that doesn’t succeed and a person is rescued from the kingdom of darkness and born into the kingdom of light, then Satan commands all of his efforts to keep the believer unaware of the miraculous provisions God has made for His daily victory. Satan will use every clever and insidious device of the world and the flesh to focus attention on ourselves and our problems instead of on Christ.

Satan will magnify our natural human weaknesses in our own minds, causing us to feel inferior with God and with man. He will stir up our pride to make us think that we are not getting the recognition from other believers that we feel we deserve. He will let jealousy bring division between brothers in Christ. He loves to get Christians so off- balance on doctrinal issues that we forget to love and accept those who differ with us. If we spend much time dwelling on our weaknesses and sins, it won’t be long before we become discouraged and defeated.

Let us abide in the Lord’s Word which declares that you shall know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free. The Truth is simply Jesus Who is the Word.

  1. Amen! In this last day, we are to fastened our belt of Truth in order to stand against the lie of the evil one. Only when we have the Truth we will be set free and and able to have “Victory” in Christ. Blessed by this article.
